Research

For over 40 years, the Nature Reserve Estancia San Lorenzo has been the place chosen by researchers from the CONICET (NATIONAL SCIENTIFIC AND TECHNICAL RESEARCH COUNCIL) and other world research institutions.

Thanks to researchers, we know that San Lorenzo penguins swim 25-65 km to reach the feeding area located northeast from the rookery. This area is as big as 25 times the city of Buenos Aires: 5,000km2!

The penguins from San Lorenzo swim shorter distances and spend less time in the feeding areas than penguins from other colonies. Food is therefore closer and abundant; that would explain why this rookery grows.

A single forage trip will last about 24 hrs. Penguins take approximately 700 dives a day at an average diving depth of 22mt and a maximum of 120mt.

With every dive they spend around 1:30 minutes under water and cover a distance of approximately 170mt.
The penguins from San Lorenzo start their foraging trips very early in the morning, earlier than penguins from other rookeries, and they return to their borrows by 4 pm.
